Physics 20 Reading List for the week of 11/15-11/19/2004
All the readings for this week are about the gravitational dynamics of celestial bodies. Here we go:
- A somewhat lengthy history of celestial mechanics, with links to biographies of all the main players. Read it if this is your thing, or try the spiffier article by Neil deGrasse Tyson (Natural History, Nov 2002).
- On the Lagrange points: an introduction in the context of the NASA WMAP mission, by Neil Cornish. If you're interested, it links to a mathematical derivation.
- On the Trojan asteroids: a short history in the Wikipedia. It links to an list of all known such bodies (Achilles, Patroclus, Hektor...)
- On choreographic orbits: an introduction in the American Mathematical Society's What's New in Mathematics Feature Column. Read all six parts, but don't worry too much about the details in parts 3, 5, and 6. Ask for the help of your TA and/or lab manager if your browser is not visualizing the Java applets.
